Pumpkins belong to the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae), i.e. to the family of cucumbers, zucchini and melons. They are actually climbing - vine-like - annual plants that come from Central and South America. Seeds of related species discovered in Mexico date back to 7000 - 5500 years BC.
